  18. My heartfelt condolences go out to his whole family. I hope everyone finds peace and solace in this difficult time. James was a pillar of the gaming community. Hearing of his passing is tremendously sad. I am so sorry for your loss.

It is incredibly poignant that his family took time in their grief to inform the friends his creativity and kindness cultivated around the world. If truth is told, the first time I made it into his weekly news briefs - one of the most valuable contributions anyone has made to our hobby - I showed my wife with incredible astonishment and joy. His dedication and the sense of community and kinship he inspired really touched me (and clearly others).

May he always be remembered for his imagination and ready friendship.

  20. Truly, my heart is touched by all these kind words. James and I met playing D&D and he has taught our son, Brisco, the love of gaming. Though our marriage wasn't meant to be, our friendship carried on throughout the years. I'm so happy to see that so many people "got" him and share his love of gaming. We often talked about gaming and his blog. I know that he enjoyed it and had hoped to make a career out of it. I'm sure many of you will understand that I've been searching for a gaming/dice box to use as an urn. It seem fitting.

Again, thank you all for the kind words. Please keep our son in your thoughts. He deeply misses his father.

Thank you, Jillena (ex-wife, friend, & chaotic evil sorceress)

  27. James was a kind soul, and someone who had done much for others while never standing in the limelight. He was, I think, universally respected among those who had known him - always kind and helpful, never mean or unkind. My condolences to the whole family. Rest in peace.

  31. James was a wonderful person who shared his love for the hobby with the world by promoting every project that caught his eye, big or small, famous or unknown, first timer or grizzled veteran.

James' work on his two blogs---The Underdark Gazette and the more-recent Dreams of Mythic Fantasy---were the lifeblood of old-school gaming awareness.

My condolences to Jillena Smets, your son, and the rest of your family: James was such a wonderful positive person, which came through so clearly via online interaction with him, that in person he must have been a saint! He will be missed!

    Allan.
