Holy Crap, I'm DMing This Friday! Help me Pick a Setting!

Thought I had another week. Oops!

I'm running AD&D. Got nothin' prepped. Turning to my library o' Gaming Stuff!

Gonna use an other than homebrewed setting.

  1. Greyhawk.
  2. Blair's Planet Algol.
  3. Vornheim.
  4. Wilderlands of High Fantasy.
  5. Forgotten Realms Greybox.
  6. Formalhaut.
Gotta decide, quick!

  1. Planet Algol will always be a personal favorite, being the first blog I followed. Not sure if the prep time wouldn't be too long though (lotsa weird stuff that might need explanations). Formalhaut is a great quick system with a fine intro adventure too. You didn't mention any details like party composition or starting level...sooooo, just go with whatever's easiest and fun for you!

  2. Wilderlands get's my vote. Any of the multiple versions out there ;)

  3. I'll almost always prefer Greyhawk to any other setting, though "preference" doesn't mean "all the time and nothing else". So, I'd recommend Greyhawk.

  4. Greyhawk, Greyhawk, Greyhawk :D

  5. If it's going to be a dungeon, will the setting make much difference? Unless it's an outlier like Tekumel or Carcosa, and even there it's more a matter of name changes.

  6. Formalhaut is awesome, and doesn't get nearly enough love.

  7. I love Algol in a special way, but if you have nothing prepared I'd go with Vornheim. It almost game masters itself, if you know what I mean.

  8. I'd go for Vornheim simply because you can run it with little prep.

  9. Place Vornheim in the frozen north of one of the other settings.

  10. roll 1d6, obviously.

Or start with Vornheim; if you regret that the players can always leave the city but the rest of them are entire worlds you'd be stuck with.

  11. A nice bit of Greyhawk. :D

  12. Roll 1d6 makes sense, for sure. Among other possibilities : pick your favorite bits of each one and make soemthing new with it. Or ake Vornehim, add five planar doors leading to five different worlds...

  13. Put Vornheim in Greyhawk, which is a small island of weirdness on Planet Algol next to the continent of Carsosa. All of which is embedded in it's own private universe a'la Tekumel, interconnected by Humanspace Empires.

Formalhaut is the next planet closest to the sun and Wilderlands is in a bottle on the 3rd level of your megadungeon, accessible by placing 3 green men on a sacrificial altar on the 7th level.

Forgotten Realms is a series of nice stories used to scare children: El Monster terrorizes the countryside with his screeching Harperies from his home in Greenwood.

  14. I'm biased as well: Greyhawk

All other settings can be bolted on to it as your players progress.

    Ciao!

  15. Wilderlands with a side of Vornheim. Use Wilderlands as general setting out in the wilds. When they hit a city, start dropping dice in that Vornheim book, flying by the seat of your pants all the way. Yee haw!

  16. Go old-school and make up your own. If that's not worth it, go Greyhawk.

  17. Start them off in the Village of Homlet and then make it up as you go.
